Didache

What Is the Didache?

The Didache, meaning "Teaching", is a short manual for followers of Yeshua HaMashiach (Jesus the Messiah) that was likely compiled before 300 AD and possibly as early as the first or early second century. Its full title is "The Teaching of the Twelve Apostles."

The Didache contains early instructions for believers and was highly respected by the early church. It is not part of the Bible, but at one time, it was even considered for inclusion in the New Testament canon by some early church leaders.

Structure of the Didache

The Didache is divided into four main sections:

  1. The Two Ways:
The Way of Life and the Way of Death, offering moral and ethical guidance for how to live as a follower of Yeshua.

  2. Instructions on Rituals:
    – Practical guidance on baptism, fasting, and the Lord's Supper (Communion).

  3. Church Order & Leadership:
    – Teaching on how to receive traveling prophets and teachers, and how local ministry and leadership should function.

  4. Final Exhortation:
    – A reminder that Yeshua is coming again, with exhortations to live godly lives and stay prepared for His return. This section references several New Testament passages.

Why Is the Didache Important?

Although not Scripture, the Didache is valuable because it:

  • Reflects the faith and practices of some of the earliest believers.

  • Shows how followers of Yeshua organized their spiritual communities before the church became institutionalized.

  • Emphasizes discipleship, holiness, and the expectation of Yeshua's return.

Many scholars and believers today appreciate the Didache as a historical witness to early teachings and church life, rooted in the teachings of the apostles.

Also Interesting to Study:
The Epistle of Barnabas & The Shepherd of Hermas

These two early Christian writings, though not included in the Bible, were highly regarded by many believers in the first few centuries after Yeshua:

  • The Epistle of Barnabas
Offers symbolic interpretations of the Old Testament and encourages believers to live holy lives in light of the new covenant through Yeshua.

  • The Shepherd of Hermas
A collection of visions and parables that emphasize repentance, moral living, and the importance of remaining faithful. It was widely read in the early church and even included in some early versions of the New Testament.

While not considered Scripture, both writings give us a unique glimpse into the thoughts, struggles, and teachings of the early followers of Yeshua HaMashiach and can deepen your understanding of the early faith.
